PLOT A: Eleusinian Mysteries
Eleusinian Mysteries: on the path to Initiation

In this visit to the virtual world of the Athenian Agora, spectators discover the Athens of the Hellenistic era through events taking place in the context of one of the city’s oldest traditions. The visitor reaches the Agora, early in fall, approximately 150 years before the birth of Christ. During this period the time-honoured and very popular Eleusinian Mysteries take place in Athens, into which the visitor is also interested in becoming initiated. In order to be allowed to become an initiate, he must first achieve ‘knowledge’. For this reason he is busy collecting information concerning the Mysteries and their wider cultural context. Moving freely inside the virtual world, the visitor meets people and discovers clues on the rituals and the popularity of the mystical institution. In his various ‘adventures’ in the area of the Agora, the visitor is accompanied by a young Athenian, his personal mystagogue.
