The visitor of the virtual world of the Agora of Athens is introduced to Athens of the Late Roman period, exactly at the point when the once flourishing city is faced with the gravest of dangers. Experiencing the exigent circumstances of the Heruli raid, in 267 AD, the spectators discover the events and the era through the actions and words of the Athenians they come into contact with. Alternating between the role of the spectator and that of the ‘agent’, visitors experience events occurring in the space of the Agora, having the opportunity to sample the general atmosphere of despair before the destruction, as well as the first thoughts on the next day and the efforts to rebuild the city. In this tour they have Dexippus as their guide, a historian who in the face of danger temporarily relinquished his intellectual pursuits to raise his fellow Athenians and organize their resistance against the barbarian invaders. On the occasion of these tragic events, modern Greeks are given an incentive to discover some of the characteristics of the gradual transition of Hellenism from Antiquity to Byzantium.
